Boxing Match Raises Money for Hero of McAvan's Shooting Spree
Liverpool (WSYR-TV) - On Saturday, Feb. 28th, Central New Yorkers raised $1,700 for Lawrence Gabriel, the man credited with stopping 22-year-old Michael Morris as he allegedly shot six people inside McAvan's bar on Tipperary Hill in early February. The 28-year-old planned to fight Saturday evening in his first professional boxing match but had to postpone over his injuries. "It's just a little setback," said Gabriel. "I've had setbacks before." Gabriel was working as a bouncer at McAvan's when an alleged shooter came in the bar and opened fire. Gabriel, an Army veteran and father, was shot several times trying to wrestle the suspect out of the bar. "I didn't really think about it," Gabriel said about his actions. "I just reacted." As Gabriel recovers, the community has collected donations to help him on his road to recovery. Approximately $1,700 was raised for Gabriel. The veteran told News Channel 9 Saturday evening he donated the money to Ray Rinaldi's gym, Ray's Kidz.
